💧 City of Portland, TN Backflow Prevention Information
The City of Portland Department of Utilities (PDU) requires annual inspections of backflow prevention devices to protect the public water supply from contamination.
Why Backflow Prevention Matters
Backflow devices prevent contaminated water from flowing back into the main drinking supply due to pressure changes. This is mandated by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC)to protect against cross-connection contamination.
Who Needs a Backflow Preventer?
Backflow prevention devices are required for all customers within the PDU service area:
- Most commercial and educational buildings, construction sites, all industrial, institutional, and medical facilities, all fountains, lawn irrigation systems, swimming pools, softeners and other point of use treatment systems.
- All Fire lines.
Inspections and Responsibility
- Annual Inspections: Certified Backflow Inspectors shall conduct annual inspections to ensure devices are functioning correctly.
- Property Owner Responsibility: Property owners are responsible for the installation, operation, and maintenance of these devices.
