In July of 2020, Portland PD instituted the position of Chaplain. The primary role of the Chaplain is to be a listening ear and spiritual advisor as our officers have need. Some call it the Ministry of Presence. The Chaplain does ride alongs, occasionally visits the PPD, will attend difficult police scenes as requested by the PPD staff, and is an available spiritual advisor and friend to all the PPD.
Our Chaplain, Bob Moon, has been in vocational ministry for over 45 years. He came to Portland in 2013 and served as the administrative and educational pastor at First Baptist Portland for 7 years. He is active in the Portland community. Even though his position is volunteer, he is available for our officers and their families at any time.
Chaplain Moon is also available to assist families who have lost loved, and have been notified of their loss through the PPD. The PPD and Chaplain Moon have created a flier to assist families to navigate the difficult decisions immediately following the death of a loved one. These are available from our officers, at the PPD
