The Portland Fire Department has 250 dual sensor smoke detectors to install in homes across the City of Portland.  THE SMOKE DETECTORS AND INSTALLATION ARE FREE!!!!  Call the fire station today to schedule an appointment for a firefighter to come out and install the detector(s).  While at your home, we will assist you in performing a home safety inspection, practice emergency exit drills with your children, help establish a safe meeting place outside the home in case of a fire, and help your children practice to get out and stay out. You will also get a magnetic card to go on your fridge.  It will as a reminder to test your detector each month and change the battery twice a year.

By having working smoke detectors in your home, you decrease the chances of dying in a house fire by more than 50%

In 2010, there were 77 lives lost in house fires across Tennessee(4th most in the nation). As of March 7, 2011, there have been 20 fire deaths.

More than half of the fire deaths investigated were found to NOT have a working smoke detector in the home.
