Welcome To Portland, Tennessee
Home of the Annual Middle Tennessee Strawberry Festival
As Mayor, I want you to know this is an exciting time for Portland, Tennessee. So many opportunities are available! We welcome you to visit with us and see why many believe that our city will be one of the next fastest growing areas of the state.
From our heritage of hometown values and delicious strawberries to our notoreity for industry, we are looking forward to the future of this great city.
Voted as one of the "friendliest cities" in Tennessee to do business with, Portland is a good choice for those looking for investment possibilities.
We have long been known for our southern hospitality and way of life, and we trust you will find Portland a good place to visit, live, work, or make an investment.
The City of Portland was incorporated in 1905 and is located in Northern Middle Tennessee, only 30 minutes north of Nashville.
In 2007, Portland has grown to a population of just under 11,000, yet has managed to retain a small town atmosphere.
For most of its' history, Portland was known as the "Strawberry Capitol" of the state. Although that's no longer true, we still celebrate with our traditional Strawberry Festival every year during the third week of May.
Because of Portland’s proximity to Interstate 65 and Nashville, where Interstates 65, 40 and 24 intersect, and where we are within a day’s drive of about 50 percent of the U. S. population, the city has enjoyed opportunity for location of industrial facilities, and in more recent years, location of numerous distribution and warehousing facilities. In 2006, Federated Department Stores Distribution Center, Gastite Manufacturing, and Olhausen Billiards Manufacturing Inc. announced their relocations to Portland. Gastite and Olhausen pledged to provide 150 and 130 new jobs, respectively.
Although there's the more recent landscape of industrialization, the beautiful landscape and atmosphere of a rural, agricultural lifestyle are still evident in the outlying areas. The Portland area experiences four beautiful and distinct seasons. Most who live here know their neighbors, feel safe and secure in their homes, enjoy the availability of good schools, churches, parks, and civic organizations, and simply love living here.
We’ll continue to strive for a balance of that which makes a community a great place to call home.
Welcome to Portland!
